Powder Metal and MIM Components for Medical Devices
Medical devices place a unique set of demands on metal components: miniature geometry, flawless surface finish, repeatable mechanical performance and full traceability from raw material to finished part. Metal injection molding and powder metallurgy are the natural manufacturing routes for this class of component – net-shape production of small, complex parts that would be slow and costly to machine one at a time.
BO Powder Metal manufactures sintered and MIM components for surgical instruments, minimally invasive devices, drug delivery systems, dental and orthodontic products and laboratory equipment. We work from your drawings or 3D models in stainless steels, tool steels and titanium alloys, and we are accustomed to NDA-protected development programmes.

Surgical Instruments and Mechanisms
Reusable and single-use instruments both rely on small, strong, precisely finished metal parts. MIM delivers machined-grade density and surface quality at production volume.
- Forceps, scissor and grasper jaws – mirror-polished 316L components with fine tooth geometry formed as-sintered
- Laparoscopic instrument tips and linkages – miniature multi-part mechanisms consolidated into single MIM pieces
- Stapler and biopsy mechanism parts – cams, anvils, latch components and firing links
- Instrument handles, ferrules and collars – knurled and contoured shapes with no machining
- Needle drivers and suture passing components – hardened, wear-resistant working surfaces

Minimally Invasive, Drug Delivery and Diagnostic Devices
- Endoscopic gear trains and drive components – micro spur gears and pinions running quietly inside narrow housings
- Auto-injector and pen mechanism parts – cams, racks, release buttons and drive wheels with tight tolerance control
- Infusion pump components – wear parts, cam followers and bushings with long maintenance-free life
- Diagnostic and analytical equipment parts – sintered components for sample handling, dispensing and optical assemblies
- Miniature bearings and bushings – self-lubricating bronze parts for fans, pumps and moving carriages
Dental, Orthodontic and Laboratory Components
- Orthodontic brackets and buccal tubes – fine-detail MIM parts in stainless steel with excellent as-sintered finish
- Dental handpiece components – turbine parts, bearings and chuck mechanisms
- Prosthetic and laboratory tooling parts – small precision components for dental workflows
- Instrument trays and organisational fittings – structural sintered brackets and clips
Why Medical Device Makers Specify Powder Metal
| Requirement | Our capability |
|---|---|
| Miniaturisation | MIM and fine-powder processes produce features down to fractions of a millimetre |
| Machined-grade quality | 96-99% density, surface finish that often eliminates polishing, tolerances of ±0.3% as-sintered |
| Repeatability | Controlled powder chemistry and automated pressing give identical results lot after lot |
| Consolidated designs | Multi-piece mechanisms combined into one net-shape part, reducing assembly and tolerance stack-up |
| Traceability | Lot control from powder batch to finished part with full documentation |
| Volume flexibility | Prototype batches through millions of pieces per year on the same process |
Materials, Traceability and Quality Practices
Medical work typically starts with material selection. We regularly process 316L and 17-4PH stainless steels, 420 and 440C martensitic grades for hard cutting edges, soft magnetic alloys for powered instruments and titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V by MIM.
- Full lot traceability from raw powder to finished part, with material certificates on request
- Quality management operated to ISO 9001:2015-aligned processes, with documentation packages supporting customer audits
- Cleanroom-compatible packaging and controlled handling available for sensitive components
- Dimensional reports, surface finish and density data supplied with each shipment
- NDA-protected development, dedicated tooling and design-for-manufacturing support from first drawing
