Powder Metal Components for Robotics
Robots live or die by their gears. Every joint, every axis and every gripper depends on a transmission that is compact, precise, quiet and efficient. Powder metallurgy – increasingly combined with metal injection molding – has become a key route for producing these components at industrial volume.
BO Powder Metal manufactures precision sintered and MIM components for collaborative robots, industrial arms, service robots, AGVs, drones and actuator modules.

Harmonic Drive Components
Strain wave gears are the heart of many robotic joints, and powder metallurgy is widely used for their core parts.
- Flexsplines – thin-walled, fine-toothed cups produced by MIM or precision powder metallurgy, heat-treated for fatigue life
- Circular splines – internal-tooth rings with accurate tooth spacing and controlled distortion
- Wave generator cams and discs – high-density sintered shapes with integrated features
Planetary and Cycloidal Transmissions
- Planetary sun, planet and ring gears – formed with accurate tooth profile and hardened for load capacity
- Cycloidal discs and pins – net-shape profiles with tight profile control
- Carriers, output flanges and housings – structural sintered parts with integral mounting features
- Integrated gear-and-shaft assemblies – combining multiple features into one sintered part to cut machining and assembly cost
Joint, Actuator and Motion Components
- Actuator housings and end caps – net-shape parts in steel and stainless alloys
- Servo motor components – soft magnetic pole pieces, bushings and rotor parts
- Lead screw nuts and couplings – wear-resistant sintered components
- Joint bearings and bushings – oil-impregnated, maintenance-free
- Gripper and end-effector parts – small, complex MIM components
- Wheel and track drive components – sprockets and gears for mobile robots and AGVs
Why Robotics Teams Specify Powder Metal
| Requirement | Our capability |
|---|---|
| Miniaturisation | MIM and fine-powder pressing with features down to sub-millimetre scale |
| Backlash control | Sizing and coining to tighten tooth tolerances; matched-lot production |
| Fatigue life | High-density alloys, vacuum heat treatment and controlled porosity |
| Quiet operation | Precision tooth forming plus damping from controlled porosity |
| Scale-up speed | From prototype quantities to tens of thousands of units per month |
| Cost per joint | Net-shape forming removes most machining from the value chain |
Supporting the Robotics Supply Chain
Robotics is a fast-moving field. Our engineers work with your transmission designers on material selection, tooth geometry and process route so that the part is manufacturable and affordable at production volume – not just on the bench.
We support NDA-protected programmes, prototype batches and multi-year production agreements.
